Leon Freese (Group MD) & Lloyd Meaker (Chairman)

Mr Roy Meaker, chairman of the group since 1978, purchased an existing steel company in that year and immediately set out to change the status of the company.  He remained chairman until 1997 when his son, Lloyd Meaker, took over the position.  Leon Freese started in 1981 as Financial Manager but became Managing Director in 1982 and is now Group Managing Director.

From its inception management set out to change the company to a world class operation and today has operations in Durban, Cape Town and Gauteng.

Steelbank embraced the service centre industry about 20 years ago and during this period continuously upgraded plant to world class levels.  During 2009 various new processing lines were introduced in Johannesburg and are now fully operational – equal to the highest world standards.  Continuous improvement to plant is an ongoing activity as we feel that it is of the utmost importance to stay abreast with the best quality standards that our industry demands.

During 2007 Steelbank purchased Metpar (Pty) Ltd which had operations in Gauteng and Cape Town.  This was done in order to cover areas that Steelbank was already servicing, from the Durban operation, on an increased level, but logistically became more difficult to service as the turnover increased.  We immediately set out to expand the operation in Gauteng and we merged the operation in Cape Town with the existing Steelbank operation.  Both these activities proved very successful.

The group employs an effective Quality Control System and has certification for ISO 9001, ISO/TS 16949 and ISO 14001.

The group supplies steel to the Automotive Industry, Construction Industry and the General steel market – cut to precision at all times!  At present the group stocks flat steel products of all descriptions in excess of 30 000 tons.

Latest Developments

During 2009 the Cape Town branch has moved into their brand new premises in Parow.  The Gauteng branch has experienced drastic improvements in 2009 with brand new slitting and cut-to-length installations equal to the best in the world.  In 2010 increased warehouse facilities will be erected.

The Way Forward

Steelbank is on a new and exciting path.  The expansion, that is presently underway, has been planned over a long period.  The group is focused on quality and we feel that the key to future success is through committed and trained staff, focus on customer needs and service and loyalty to our suppliers that look after us.  These are the main assets of our company.
